About a week ago, I was lazily going through my gobs of unread email when I noticed a message from my good friend Max Teitelbaum. He’s one of the best and most profitable media buyers on the planet so when Max sends me a message I impulsively go into READ mode.

“We created a media buy intelligence tool” wrote Max.  “It lets you see what ads and landing pages other companies are running.”

“Interesting” I heard myself say.

I had seen similar products like this before, but they under-delivered. I would have been skeptical if it wasn’t for Max’s track record. He always seems to be ahead of trends. I guess I would find out why.

They appropriately named their tool WhatRunsWhere, and Max graciously agreed to set me up for a demo. But after hearing from Ralph Ruckman of Convert2Media (as well as some other industry insiders I trust) that the product was “phenomenal”, I bought a membership.

All I can say is that I’m stunned with this tool. I’ll show you why.

Get The Goods On Any CPA Advertising Campaign

So, WhatRunsWhere is super easy to use and delivers months of coveted advertising intelligence in seconds. You can choose to research either banner or text ad campaigns. Here’s how their banner search works:

1. You choose to the banner size you would like to see (300x250, 728x90 etc)

2. Choose a daily timetable (ie last 30 days, last 60 days etc)

3. Choose the keywords you would like to see

4. Enter!

To show you exactly what I’m talking about I’ll take you on a tour of a search I did in my actual account.

We’re going to investigate how the guys running the Jillian Michael’s diet campaign are making money.

I know the Jillian Michaels weight loss offer has been hot in the diet space for a while. Since it's a Cost Per Action offer, they make money every time someone clicks the ad and completes an order on this page.

A quick banner search for “Jillian Michaels” returns about 45 banner ads including these:

They are obviously split testing a bunch of ads and there were too many returned to fit in this page. By clicking on the ad on the right, WhatRunsWhere shows us the ad’s stats including how long the ad has been in action.

Some very interesting things to note here. The ad has been running for 356 days… so you can bet your house that it’s turning a profit. No one would run an ad at a loss for almost a year!

So, we can assume the ad is profitable. But on what websites is it running? Clicking on the “Show More Placements For This Ad” tab will show all the websites where the ad is being advertised, as well as for how long.

More gold here. We can see that this ad has been running solidly on one website (sorry, can’t give it away for free!) for 145 days. That means this ad + that website = WINNER. It’s making money :)

We also know that they are using the Adwords content network to distribute their advertisements.

Now, let’s take things a little deeper. Not only can we see which websites this ad has been running on, we can check out all the websites that the landing page JillianMichaels.com is being advertised.

We’ve hit paydirt captain! JillianMichaels.com is running banner advertisements on 96 different websites.

And of the 96 websites, 20 have been running JillianMichaels.com ads for more than 100 days. This means those websites + banner ads + diet offer = KACHING!

So What Does This Mean For Affiliates, Publishers and Media Buyers?

This intel greatly increases the chances that new campaigns will be profitable right from the start. It will also let you dial in your current campaigns to new and profitable ad styles and traffic sources.

For example, if I were starting a diet campaign tomorrow, those 20 websites circled above is where I would start advertising.I would contact them directly one by one because you can get lower rates going direct then by going through an ad network.

I would also research the profitable ads to try and identify what about them makes them profitable and recreate the strategy in my own ads.

What Does It Cost?

Market research companies charge thousands of $$$ for this type of info and they usually charge for one campaign at a time. WhatRunsWhere is a paid service but it only costs $229.00 / month, which is underpriced if you ask me.

Some of you may think $229.00 a month is a lot of money. But it's a small investment when you consider the enormous returns a product like this can bring. And when you finally hit a big campaign (and trust me, you will :) ) $229 will seem like peanuts.
